Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) – A Simple Step for Your Gut Health
A Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) is a quick, easy, and non-invasive way to check for hidden blood in your stool – a possible early sign of digestive issues. While you can’t always see it, blood in the stool may be caused by ulcers, polyps, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or even colorectal cancer. Because these conditions don’t always cause noticeable symptoms right away, the FIT test is a valuable screening tool, especially for bowel cancer prevention.
Cost
- *Stool FIT test £45
* There is a flat kit fee of £5, regardless of how many tests are carried out on the sample.
- Focused F2F GP appointment (15min) £75
Why might you need a FIT test?
This test is recommended if you’re experiencing:
✔ Ongoing tummy pain or discomfort
✔ Changes in your bowel habits, like diarrhoea or constipation
✔ Unexplained weight loss
✔ A family history of bowel cancer
It’s also an important part of routine health checks, especially if you’re over 50 or at higher risk of digestive conditions. Catching issues early can make all the difference.
How does a FIT test work?
The FIT test works by detecting tiny traces of blood in your stool using special antibodies that target human haemoglobin from the lower intestines. It’s a more precise and sensitive method than older stool blood tests, picking up even the smallest amounts that can’t be seen with the naked eye.
How is the test performed??
Taking a FIT test is quick and hassle-free:
- Collect a small sample at home using the simple kit provided.
- Send it to the lab for testing.
- Get your results within a few days, and your doctor will explain what they mean.
What do the results mean?
- If blood is detected, your doctor may suggest further tests, like a colonoscopy, to find out what’s causing it. A positive result doesn’t always mean something serious, as conditions like haemorrhoids or small tears can also cause traces of blood.
- If no blood is found, that’s a great sign! But regular screening is still important, especially if you have risk factors.
The FIT test is a simple but powerful way to stay on top of your health. It gives you the chance to catch potential issues early – giving you peace of mind and keeping you in control of your well-being.
